Troops spent the past month in the midst of Girl Scout Cookie season, earning Highest Awards and celebrating Girl Scout Week. Check out this month’s Mission Moments Recap.
Celebrating Cookies in the Northeast
Hundreds of girls and volunteers had a sweet time at Cookie Rally in Wilkes-Barre. Held at Toyota SportsPlex, the event featured hands-on fun and, of course, lots of cookies!
Celebrating their faith in Schuylkill, Luzerne and Susquehanna counties
Four Girl Scout troops, Brownies through Seniors, were represented at Girl Sunday service at St. John’s UCC church in Orwigsburg on March 10. The girls participated in the service by greeting members of the congregation as they entered the church. Two of the girls, Sophie Strokelitus and Mariah Litton, presented the scripture readings. For Sophie especially, the experience pushed her out of her comfort zone, but she volunteered to read thanks to the confidence she’s gained through Girl Scouts, her leader said. The girls also took turns speaking to the congregation about what their favorite activities were in Girl Scouting, educational trips they have taken, badges they have completed, community service projects, Highest Awards that they have earned, and the importance of friends they have made through Girl Scouting. After the service, the girls all worked together as a team to sell Girl Scout cookies.
Members of Penn’s Woods Service Unit 331 celebrated Girl Scout Sunday at Wyoming Valley Presbyterian Church in Wilkes-Barre. Rev. Adam Demetos and lifetime Girl Scout Mary Lou Mcgreevey welcomed the Girl Scouts to kick off Girl Scout Week. The girls shared Girl Scouts cookies with the congregation during social hour. The celebration offered a way for the girls to give back to the church, which hosts all six levels of troops.
Troop 52286 of Montrose also participated in Girl Scout Sunday services on March 10. The girls helped with the sermon at First Presbyterian Church by offering readings, and they participated in children’s church. What a nice way to share your faith, Girl Scouts!
Going Gold in Lycoming County
Sarah Marie Kline of Montoursville Borough in Lycoming County received a citation from PA State Rep. Joe Hamm for earning her Gold Award. Sarah created “Caregiver Work Stations” at the James V. Brown Library in Williamsport to earn her Highest Award. The work stations provide a safe space for infants and toddlers to play while their caregivers use the library computer for job searches, online bill paying, and other essential daily functions. Sarah currently attends Pennsylvania College of Technology majoring in Baking and Pastry Arts and Applied Management. Congratulations, Sarah!
Researching history in Dauphin County
For her Silver Award, Bridget Hallinan of Troop 11113 researched an area of Hummelstown rumored to be a gravesite. She fundraised and hired a ground-penetrating sonar company to scour the site, discovering multiple previously unknown graves. An article about her project was featured in the Hummelstown Sun newspaper. What a cool example of uncovering forgotten history!

Honing problem-solving skills in Lycoming County
Girls in the Academic Edge program at Lycoming Valley Intermediate School learned the steps for problem solving and then took on a STEM Design Challenge. They worked in pairs or small groups to build a house in 20 minutes with just the materials provided in a quart-size bag. Then they had to see if their house could withstand the wind of the Big Bad Wolf – a box fan! At another Academic Edge session, the girls collaborated to tackle an Escape Room activity. Great job working together, girls!
Pitching in to help in Susquehanna County
Carrie Scheer gave a shout out to her husband, Greg, who always helps to unload cookies for Carrie’s Cookie Cupboard in Montrose. This year, he unloaded 500 cases and stored them his pole barn! Greg is also co-leader of troop 52286. Thanks for being a team player, Greg!
