Girl Scouts advocate for period equity in Harrisburg

Period poverty is pervasive. One in five women struggle to afford the cost of menstrual supplies, according to a recent national study. Lack of access to affordable products can negatively impact attendance at school, work, or social activities.

Believing everyone deserves access to these basic needs, girls in Troop 14009 led a collection drive for menstrual products. The troop, located in Lower Paxton Township in Dauphin County, also advocated for availability of the products in schools and established a period pantry as part of their Silver Award project.

Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania, others, advocate for girls who need menstrual products.

This past week, the girls participated in a rally in support of Gov. Josh Shapiro’s $3 million period equity proposal, aimed to alleviate period poverty in the state.

Emma, Kara, Abigail, Capri, and Annabelle of Troop 14009 were invited to attend by State Sen. Maria Collett, who hosted the event with state senators Amanda Cappelletti and Judy Schwank as well as other dignitaries, including State Rep. Justin Fleming. The rally was held at the state capitol complex in Harrisburg.

Through their project and their presence at the rally, these Girl Scouts used their voices to affect positive change for all women. We can’t wait to see what they accomplish next!
