When most people think of camping, they picture sunny days, warm hikes, and long afternoons by the lake. But the magic of camping doesn’t stop when summer ends.
“Pennsylvania’s outdoors are beautiful in every season! We’re lucky to live where the colors and adventures change all year long,” said Natalie Larson, camp program manager for Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania. “Our camp properties offer a range of comfy lodging options that are great for cozy, colder nights with your troop.”
Every Season Brings Something New
According to Larson, fall and winter open up a whole new world of activities for Girl Scouts. Archery is offered year-round at all four GSHPA camp locations. Boating continues at Camp Archbald through mid-October, and both Camp Small Valley and Camp Happy Valley feature team-building courses that run throughout the colder months.
The shorter days make it a great time for stargazing. “Since it gets dark earlier, it’s a great time to learn about the stars and find constellations in the crisp night sky,” Larson said. “You can also do a lot of different arts and crafts using the fallen leaves on the ground.”
Even snow and ice add to the adventure. “You can track animal prints in the snow, make snow paintings, or even bring your sleds and go sledding,” she added.
No Experience? No Problem!
If your troop is new to camping, we make it easy to get started.
“We offer fully facilitated camp weekends throughout the year,” Larson said. “They are great for leaders who are new to camping or who do not have the extra certifications or trainings required to take their troop camping on their own.”
These themed weekends are all-inclusive—meals, lodging, badge work, and activities are provided. “All your troop needs to do is register and chaperone overnight,” Larson added.
Camp Is for Everyone
Whether your girls love the outdoors or prefer cozy indoor activities, there’s a place for them at camp
“Camp can really be for anyone, even if you think you’re not ‘outdoorsy,’” Larson said. “Brainstorm what your troop likes to do and see if you can do it at camp! What could be better than a spa day by the lake? Or playing board games and making hot cocoa in a cozy cabin in the woods?”
Earn a Patch, Too!
This fall, troops can also take part in the Get Outdoors Challenge, a free patch program that runs from October through May and encourages Girl Scouts to enjoy outdoor adventures across all seasons.
