Daisies and Brownies with the Academic Edge Girl Scout program at McNichols Educational Plaza in Scranton celebrated Mardi Gras/Carnival and Lunar New Year for World Thinking Day Feb. 17.
For Lunar New Year, the girls made paper lantern crafts and learned about the Year of the Red Horse. They discussed the concept of “chingu” in Korean culture in respecting one’s elders. Because of the popularity of the animated film “KPop Demon Hunters,” this lesson was particularly exciting for the girls.
For Mardi Gras/Carnival, they discussed how some regions of the U.S. refer to Fat Tuesday as “Donut Day.” That led to discussing Pennsylvania Dutch culture and fastnachts (potato-filled donuts).
They also learned how to call each other “friend” in several languages.
They finished the program with a KPop dance party and parade out of the school library.
