Troops explore Washington, D.C.

Junior Troop 12267 and Cadette Troop 12268 traveled to Washington, D.C. to explore monuments, visit historical locations, and the greater area. To start off their adventure-filled weekend, they said hello to our friends at Girl Scouts of the Nation’s Capital by staying at Camp Aquasco in Maryland. It’s always a treat to experience Girl Scout camps we usually wouldn’t see!

Many girls started off their trip with their first subway ride. This resourceful troop successfully navigated the public transport to arrive at Washington, D.C. for a full weekend! On Friday night, the girls visited a few key places, including the Washington Monument and the Lincoln and Jefferson Memorials as well as those for WWII and the Korean War. Their trip also gave the girls the chance to practice budgeting, since they had so many hard choices to make when buying souvenirs!

On Saturday, the troop split up and pursued their interests. Some Girl Scouts visited the Smithsonian museums and others explored the Capitol and the Library of Congress. Everyone was able to choose their path for the day and learn new things. Many girls in the group chose to go on a guided history walk with a re-enactor to learn how police solved Abraham Lincoln’s assassination! Sunday was spent meeting lots of new friends (most of them furry) at the National Zoo.

Girls learned all about history, government, and citizenship on this trip. They bonded with their troop and built their confidence by navigating a new place. We hope that every girl found something she wants to explore more the next time she visits D.C.
