Summer is a time many troops take a break from meetings, but a few of our girls are still making an impact on their community during the summer! Check out this month’s Mission Moments.
Feeding the hungry
With the rise of the cost of food, girls in Junior Troop 31128 in Schuylkill County saw an increase of people in need in their community.
The girls volunteered at their local food pantry and saw firsthand just how many people were receiving boxes of food and other products to help them survive. They were inspired by other Girl Scouts who had been in the same troop and who built a blessing box to be placed at a local soup kitchen. They also wanted to help the less fortunate in their community. The girls invited a local resident who runs a blessing box of his own to come to their meeting and discuss the importance of their project and teach them about sustainability.
In May, with his assistance and guidance, the girls collected donations, then built and placed the box on the main street of Auburn. A local resident gave the girls permission to place the blessing box in front of her residence. The woman also will accept donations at her home if the box is full and will replenish the box as needed. Their project was shared on two local community Facebook pages, and they have received an overwhelmingly positive response to their project. The girls are very proud of their accomplishment to be able to make such an impact in their community. Nice job, Girl Scouts!
Honoring history
Girls from Troops 20402 and 20996 in York County led a flag ceremony at a Semiquincentennial Bell Dedication in July. After presenting the flags, the Girl Scouts handed the microphone over to 103-year-old World War II veteran Robert V. Kuhn, who led the Pledge of Allegiance. The dedication unveiled a full-size, bronze bell at Camp Security, a Revolutionary War prisoner-of-war camp, in preparation for celebrating America’s 250th birthday in 2026. After the ceremony, the girls enjoyed meeting state political figures including Congressman Scott Perry and former Governor Tom Corbett. Many attendees thanked the girls for their service at the ceremony and commented on the professionalism of their honor guard. Way to go, girls!
