Girl Scouts at the Kingston Recreation Center got hands-on while learning about science this summer. They experimented with vibrations, tones, and frequencies using their own creations. One was their version of a Chladni plate. Chladni plates are flat sheets of metal that use vibrations and sound waves to move physical objects on their surface into complex patterns. Girl Scouts created these plates using household objects of different sizes and weights to discover which vibrations were strong enough to create movement. They even put their own voices to the test, experimenting with pitch, volume, and tone to see whether vocal sound waves could produce enough vibration to move objects on their homemade instruments.
Girl Scouts discovered that sound isn’t just something we hear. It’s energy traveling through vibrations that can have a visible, physical effect on the world around us!
