If you’ve been thinking about becoming a Girl Scout troop leader or you know a friend who’s considering it, but you’re not sure it’s the right move, read on. We hear it all the time: People love the idea of helping girls grow, but they hesitate because of a few common myths. Let’s bust them right now.
Myth #1: You had to be a Girl Scout yourself.
Not true! Many of our most inspiring leaders never wore a sash or sold a single box of cookies as a kid. All you need is a passion for helping girls discover their strengths, and we’ll give you the tools to lead with confidence.
Myth #2: You must be an expert in camping, crafts, or cookies.
Nope. You don’t have to know how to start a campfire, sew a badge, or juggle cases of Thin Mints. You and your troop can learn new skills together, and we provide step-by-step resources for everything.
Myth #3: You’ll spend all your free time on troop stuff.
You set the pace! Many troops meet twice a month, and with a co-leader and parent helpers, planning is a team effort. You can choose a schedule that works for you, and planning gets easier each year.
Myth #4: You have to pay for everything.
Troop funds, often from fall product and cookie sales, cover most activities and supplies. You’re not expected to cover expenses out of your own pocket.
Myth #5: You’re on your own.
Far from it! You’ll have a co-leader, supportive parents, and dedicated council staff ready to help. You’ll also be part of a network of other leaders who share ideas, tips, and encouragement.
Being a Girl Scout troop leader isn’t about perfection; it’s about connection. You’ll make a difference in girls’ lives while having fun, learning new things, building friendships of your own, and enriching your own life.
