If you’re a Girl Scout alumnae over 40 who’s interested in keeping Girl Scout traditions alive, you might be interested in joining a new Pennsylvania chapter of the Green Hat Society.

Belinda Stefl, a national delegate and Thanks Badge II recipient became a Brownie in 1966. “They didn’t have daisies back then,” she laughed.

She remained in Girl Scouting through high school and helped local troops when she was in college. In 1979, she became a troop leader.

“When I was a Girl Scout leader, we still wore green hats,” she said.

So, it was almost inevitable she would start a Green Hat chapter. Besides preserving Girl Scout traditions and getting together for trips and camaraderie, the Green Hats bring wisdom, expertise and hands-on help to troop leaders.

“We’re older ladies, and when you get older, sometimes you feel like you’ve lost your place [in society]. We want to help leaders. Some of the skills we have, they don’t. I still teach archery to this day. Helping benefits us. It benefits the volunteers, and it benefits the girls,” she said.
