Fulton County Troop climbs to new heights in West Virginia

As part of their Climbing Adventure Badge and Trailblazing goals, girls from McConnellsburg Troop 81597 in Fulton County took to Martinsburg, West Virginia, for training at the Climbing New Heights gym. After learning about safety and cliff climbing, the girls headed to Balcony Rock at Harper’s Ferry for a guided climb. This took them to the 80-foot-high Crown of Thorns Balcony Rock cliff face. A tour and ice cream treat capped off the adventure of a lifetime.

Dauphin County Troop 10840 learns about sisterhood

By forging a paper chain together – which included every member’s name and images representing themselves and their affection for their troop and – girls are creating sisterly friendships. By expanding their sisterhood through a connection with a United Kingdom Girl Guide Unit, Troop 10840 expanded their understanding of what it means to create a sisterhood. The Pennsylvania girls asked questions of their British counterparts and will enjoy their responses through a recorded message. The Q&A is part of their getting-to-know-you efforts.

Nature hike carves opportunity for leadership

On April 15, a member from Girl Scout Troop 10840 attended her first outdoor nature hike at Strawberry Hills Nature Adventure Day in Adams County. Along with making new friends and sharing experiences of the natural world – like touching a frog and discovering a variety of cool bugs – Girl Scout Sylvia better understands the value of the buddy system when taking an outdoor excursion. She shared with her Adams County Troop members the importance of staying put should you become separated from your buddy or group during a hike or while in a wilderness area. Sylvia’s valuable experiences and enthusiasm for her outdoor adventure will help prepare the girls as they take their first adventure hike together.

Schuylkill County Troop 33013 honors volunteer fire companies with cookies

What says “thank you” better than Girl Scout Cookie treats?!

Girl Scout Cookies are a signature treat that is hard to beat. That’s why girls in Troop 33013 donated 192 packages of Girl Scout Cookies to 12 volunteer fire companies in April, offering their heart-felt thank you for keeping their homes and local communities safe from fire disasters. Each of the fire companies received 16 packs of Girl Scout Cookie signature sweet treats.

Budgeting skills helped Lancaster Troop 70122 donate cookie sales

Girls in Lancaster County Troop 70122 used their budding business skills to donate 10% of their Girl Scout Cookie sales to benefit a local animal shelter. The girls shopped for items to donate and recycled cookie boxes to craft into cat scratching posts. Those who work and volunteer at the shelter were remembered, too, as girls donated cookies to be enjoyed by those who work and volunteer at the shelter.

Also in Lancaster County…

With a mission to let nothing go to waste, leaders of Friendly Valley Service Unit 712 donated excess Girl Scout Cupboard cookies to these Lancaster-based organizations: Lancaster Food Hub, The Art of Lancaster/Lebanon, and Lancaster Science Factory volunteers.

Religious Emblem Recognitions earned across Harrisburg area by Girl and Boy Scout members

On Sunday, April 25, members of Harrisburg area Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts attended a Catholic Mass and Recognition program, where they were honored for achieving their Religious Emblem Award. The event was celebrated at St. Catherine Labouré Church in Harrisburg with Bishop Ronald Gainer the celebrant. Girls who had earned the National and Diocesan Religious Emblem Recognition Award were greeted and welcomed by Bishop Grainer. Girls who had earned workshop patches were also recognized by the bishop at the event.

Calling future chefs in Monroe County

Monroe County Girl Scout Troop 52299 attended cooking lessons from area pros at Frogtown Chophouse in Swiftwater (Cresco) Monroe County. The girls enjoyed learning how to prepare various foods lead by Frogtown Executive Chef Lyman Winner and Pastry Chef Cheryl Monroe. Proper knife skills, baking techniques, how to season, sauté, bake and grill were part of the day’s cooking class and demonstration. The girls learned how to clean and wash up, too – a vital part of the food preparation process. The day’s menu included: Frogtown’s signature crab cakes, grilled chicken skewers, zucchini, angel food cake and Girl Scouts cookie cheesecakes.

Dauphin County Troop 11112 learns first-hand about Ronald McDonald House mission

Daisy members from Dauphin County Troop 11112 voted to use some of their Girl Scout Cookie sales to help stock the Hershey, PA, Ronald McDonald House. Girls shopped together at the local Dollar General to buy pantry items. They were able to donate their snack and pantry items in person at Ronald McDonald House, where they received an informational guided tour of the facility.

Ronald McDonald House provides housing and arrangements for families who must travel to receive medical care for their seriously ill children. Included in the housing is a small kitchen, refrigerator, microwave, snacks, coffee, television and a common area for families to socialize and relax, according to the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central PA.
