May Mission Moment Recap

Whether taking care of the Earth or taking care of each other, Girl Scouts are making an impact in their communities. Check out this month’s Mission Moments.

Looking out for nature in Lancaster County

Girls from Troop 70521 helped to clean up a tree that fell after a storm at Paradise Park, near the building where they meet. The troop plans to use some of the fallen wood to make art project bases for the younger Paradise troops.

What a great way to use resources wisely!

Pike County troop focuses on foster care

Cadette Girl Scouts from Troop 51441 learned about the unique needs of children in foster care from a guidance counselor at their middle school. One of the issues faced by many children in foster care is a lack of dignity caused by having only garbage bags to transport their belongings. The girls discussed this issue at a troop meeting and came up with a plan to donate new duffel bags to children in foster care. They researched online to find quality, cost-effective bags and called on their families to help support their cause.

The girls donated 72 duffel bags to three foster care organizations in Wayne and Pike counties — KidsPeace, Wayne County Children and Youth, and Pike County Children and Youth.

Nice job spreading kindness to people in need!

Watching animals at work in Wayne County

Cadettes in Troop 50143 learned about animals helping humans by meeting with Onyx, a K-9 from the Wayne County sheriff’s office and his handler, Dani Vanhorn. The girls interviewed Dani and learned about Onyx’s training and work with the sheriff’s department.

Lancaster County troops clean up along a creek

All five levels of troops that meet at Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church, including Troop 71266, joined together with Friends of Fishing Creek to clean up trash along the three-mile creek-side road. They started the day with a flag ceremony, took a hayride to the creek, cleaned up the trash, and then came back for hot dogs over a fire for lunch. It was great to see girls of all levels, from Daisies to Ambassadors, working together and partnering with a local organization to keep the area clean.

Supporting the community in Dauphin County

Daisy Troop 10730 wanted to do something for the homeless with their cookie money. The girls got together on a Saturday afternoon to shop for items to be donated for homeless kits. They also purchased pet items for a rescue, and they bought snacks to be included in a sunshine box which will be given to a cancer patient undergoing chemo. In addition, they made pet blankets as their Take Action Project for the 5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals Journey. They also made a comfy blanket to be included in the sunshine box. And, to bring a little more sunshine to the patient’s life, they each drew her a picture.

We love to see Girl Scouts demonstrating how to be caring and considerate to everyone!

Honoring Earth Day in Lycoming County

Members of Troop 62019 celebrated Earth Day by cleaning up trash along the streets in Hughesville. They turned it into a fun and interactive scavenger hunt along the way, filling three trash bags and demonstrating how to make the world a better place.

Lancaster County troop earns Car Care badge

Girls from Troop 70441 traveled to the Chester County Technical College High School to meet Jenny Sassaman in her small engine shop. They completed the Car Care badge by taking apart small engines. The girls also changed tires, checked oil, and learned about six different types of fluids that vehicles need.

They also learned how to check a battery and clean off the battery connectors. This community connection helped prepare the girls as they begin driving and maintaining their own vehicles.

Supporting Habitat for Humanity in Luzerne County

Girls in Troops 30130 and 33206 recently volunteer for Habitat for Humanity, working on a house in Pittston. The Girl Scouts helped to level the basement for concrete pouring, measured plywood for the roof, and used the TranzSporter 2000 to hand off the measured plywood to those working on the roof of the home.

Habitat for Humanity is an organization that builds new homes in partnership with people who are unable to secure a conventional mortgage. Troop leader Amanda Myzick introduced the project to Kathy Lockman so the troops could volunteer.

Loving the Earth in Lancaster County

Juliette Girl Scouts Arianna and Giovanna and Ava from Troop 71295 had fun at the Lancaster Library Earth Day Extravaganza. The girls learned about recycling and composting, and they made a craft to use for their scavenger hunt. They followed up their activities with a yummy lunch of empanadas and cupcakes.
