Cultivating Gratitude in Girl Scouts: Fun Activities to Try

As the holidays approach, it’s the perfect time for Girl Scouts to pause and reflect on what we’re thankful for, including our friends, families, communities, and the world around us. Practicing gratitude doesn’t just make us feel good; it helps us grow into kinder, more compassionate leaders.

Whether your troop meets in person or virtually, here are fun and meaningful ways to help girls of every level — from Daisies to Ambassadors — explore gratitude together.

Make a Gratitude Tree

Give each girl a paper leaf and invite her to write something she’s thankful for. Attach the leaves to a paper trunk on the wall or a branch in a vase. Watch your troop’s “gratitude tree” grow with each meeting!

Write Thank-You Notes

Have girls write or decorate thank-you cards for someone who’s made a difference in their lives, such as a teacher, neighbor, family member, or community helper. Encourage them to deliver or mail their notes.

Create Gratitude Jars

Ask each Girl Scout to decorate a small jar or container with stickers, ribbon, or washi tape. Every week, they can write one thing they’re thankful for on a slip of paper and add it to the jar. By the end of the year, they’ll have a collection of happy memories and positive thoughts to look back on!

No supplies? Have girls start a digital gratitude journal using a shared Google Doc or photo album.

Practice Community Gratitude

Challenge your troop to “pay it forward” with a gratitude-inspired service project.

  • Make kindness rocks with painted thank-you messages to place around town.
  • Collect donations for a local food pantry and include handwritten notes of encouragement.
  • Record short thank-you videos to share with first responders or nursing homes.

Reflect and Share

Make gratitude a part of your Friendship Circle as you close your meetings. Each girl can share one thing or person she’s thankful for that day. It’s a simple, no-cost ritual that builds connection and positivity every time you meet.

Remember, you don’t need fancy supplies to help girls cultivate gratitude. What matters most is consistency. Build moments of reflection and kindness into every troop experience, and we can all work together to make the world a better place.
