Girl Scouts Inspire: Engineering, Community Service, and Fun

The past few months have been busy ones for our Girl Scouts! Check out the latest Mission Moments recap, and don’t forget to send your troop news to us so we can highlight your troop next time!

Thinking like an engineer in Franklin County

Troop 80174 partnered with Alexander Hamilton Memorial Free Library in Waynesboro along with other local troops for a STEM Saturday. Librarian Julie Diaz guided Junior Girl Scouts through three engineering badges: Balloon Car, Crane, and Paddle Boat Design. It was a wonderful day bringing troops from different areas together while exploring various engineering challenges. Julie encouraged girls to think like an engineer, who often needs to come up with multiple solutions when builds don’t initially go as planned. The troop thanks Julie for being a role model to the Junior Girl Scouts!

Lycoming troops support veterans

Service Unit 624 supported veterans in a veterans parade in Muncy in November. Four troops—62070, 62015, 62019, and 60278—were represented at the event. The girls also helped put wreaths on graves with Wreaths Across America in December at the Wildwood Cemetery in Williamsport.

On a roll in Luzerne County

Troop 33265 visited the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Roller Derby team in December. The team showed the girls how roller derby is played and celebrated inclusion in the sport’s field. The girls even made their own roller derby names and signs!

Being a friend to bees in Adams County

Daisy Troop 80778 from Gettysburg created and handed out local pollinator-friendly seeds contained in seed balls at the Gettysburg Christmas Festival in December. This was the troop’s Clover Project for the Between Earth and Sky journey. The girls educated the community about the importance of bees and also asked members of the community to sign a pledge, assuring that they would help to save the bees. Way to make the world a better place, Girl Scouts!

Exploring space in Lycoming County and beyond

Troop 60278, a multilevel troop of Daisies through Cadettes, worked on their Space badge in the month of January. Their adventure started with a visit to the Detwiler Planetarium at Lycoming College where the girls were treated to a show in their newly updated facility. Afterwards, students from the physics department, under the direction of planetarium director (and troop volunteer!) Melissa Kiehl, assisted the girls in making a sun craft.

Later in the month, the troop visited Discovery Space in State College. After exploring and interacting with many science exhibits, the girls participated in three activities designed to further their knowledge of space. The fun was out of this world!

Cleaning up in Schuylkill County

Girls in Troop 31134 partnered with the Schuylkill Haven Island Park Committee this past fall. The committee hosts an annual community event called “The Pumpkin Patch,” which is a daylong event at a local park and river trail location.

The troop joined in at the end of the day and walked all around the fields, trail, and park area to do a community clean up. They collected more than a dozen full bags of garbage to leave their community better than they found it!

Helping out in Luzerne County

Troop 32525, made up of Juniors and Cadettes, planned, shopped, made dinner, and delivered a meal and snacks to Divine Providence Emergency Shelter in Hazleton. The activity was a wonderful display of sisterhood and support for people in need.

Getting hands-on with glass

Each year, Troop 61238 in Lycoming County creates a DIY ornament to commemorate their Girl Scout year. This year they decided to let Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, N.Y., lend a hand. After a snowstorm derailed their first plans, they were able to reschedule for late January, when they participated in glassblowing. The girls got to pick from various sculptures to ornaments, including a snowperson. They also participated in a Girl Scout activity from the New York council to learn all things glass.
